FAQs
Discover the transformative benefits of private fencing lessons tailored just for you.
Should my fencer take
private lessons?
The short answer is yes. The longer answer is more involved. Group classes are structured around drills, bouting and games. While coaches provide guidance during class, fencing actions are very precise - and fencing is an individual sport. It is not possible to give each fencer the level of instruction necessary to master the sport in a group setting, which is why private lessons are beneficial.
When should my fencer start private lessons?
It takes time for a fencer to develop strong skills, and private lessons do help reduce the time it takes to progress from absolute beginner to proficiency and beyond. Many fencers will start lessons within 3 to 6 months - especially if they have competitive aspirations. That said, it does depend on the family and fencer's objectives.
What happens during a private lesson?
Depending on your fencer's proficiency, our coaches may focus on key fencing skills or tactics geared towards your fencer's needs. Early lessons focus on proper form for attack or defense, while more advanced lessons will add tactics or complex sequences of fencing actions. This helps each fencer develop their own style, within which they can incorporate their lesson learning.
How many private lessons should my fencer take?
Fencers generally start with 1 lesson per week. At the point when a fencer starts competing regularly, it is a good idea to add 1 or 2 additional lessons per week to reinforce the muscle memory and supplement work done in group classes.
Shouldn't we take as many lessons as possible?
While it may seem attractive to load up on private lessons, lessons are only one aspect of training a fencer. It is important to recognize that lessons learnings must be coupled with practice and bouting sessions during group lessons. We believe that, at a certain point, lessons can have diminishing returns. The most advanced fencers excel with just 3 to 4 lessons per week.
How long is a private lesson?
As fencers begin to learn the sport, lessons are more fundamental in nature and run 20 minutes. As fencers develop, they need a different, more involved lesson that runs 25 minutes.
When should my fencer arrive for their private lesson?
Fencers should arrive 10-15 minutes before their scheduled lesson time to warm up before their lesson. Our coaches are punctual and often run back-to-back lessons with different students. If a fencer arrives at exactly at their scheduled time the coach will ask them to warm up before starting their lesson, reducing the actual instructional time. If a fencer arrives late for their lesson it usually results in a shorter lesson as well.
What should my fencer bring to their lesson?
Fencers will use their weapon, mask, and glove for the lesson. As with our group classes, fencers are expected to wear proper footwear. They should also bring water or sport recovery drink. They do not need their other fencing gear for a lesson.
