How Troy Found His Passion for Fencing

How did you learn about fencing? How long have you been fencing for?

I first learned about fencing from an introductory fencing class at my local Chinese School. I have been fencing for 7 years.

The Joy of Fencing

What do you love about fencing?

The thing I love most about fencing is the uniqueness of the sport. Fencing is incredibly tactical. Developing a strategy and executing it properly is satisfying. You manipulate your opponent to do what you want, exactly when you want them to do it. This requires skill beyond just technique and physical training.
I also appreciate both the individual and team aspects of this sport. Each has its own chances to shine. I practice because of my drive to improve. When I compete alone, I know I’m responsible for everything that happens. I can rely on my training, and I’m in control.
In a team setting, the environment is completely different. At school, I’m part of a team. During meets, my entire team erupts in celebration whenever anyone scores. This shared joy is something you don’t experience when competing solo.

Life Lessons from Fencing

What is one important lesson you have learned about life from fencing?

The most important lesson I’ve learned is the value of perseverance. If you put in the time and have the drive to improve, hard work and determination will always triumph over natural gifts and talent.

Beyond the Strip: Troy's Interests

What do you enjoy doing outside of fencing?

Outside of fencing, I enjoy sleeping.

Looking Ahead: Future Goals

What is your next goal (fencing or otherwise)?

My next goal is to survive the college application process.

Words of Wisdom for Young Fencers

What advice do you have for younger fencers?

In sports and in life, always believe in yourself. This is something I’ve struggled with since I started. I often doubted my abilities. If you have a goal in fencing, keep working towards it. Never stop believing you can achieve it.
It doesn’t matter how good your opponent is or how many touches you’re down by. You need to believe that you can beat anyone. Trust yourself and your skills. If you ever tell yourself you can’t do it, that’s when you’ve truly lost.
